4 Crochet Baby Jackets & dress

While on vacation over Christmas my Vavo asked me to make her some baby jackets from a jacket that my Aunt Nonnie wore as a baby 60+ years ago. The jacket is worn out.

Original jacket made from baby wool:

My Vavo wants her great-great-grandchildren to have similar jackets (these are also the grandchildren of my aunt, so it makes sense). So I set to work making more jackets for my grandmother to give to my cousins. I hadn't planed on this. I was making yoyo afghan squares, so just happened to have thread and a hook that I could reproduce the patterns. I made three while in California and will make one more. I will also send a dress I made a year ago for my Vavo to give out during the 3 baby showers that will happen on Super bowl Sunday at her house. There are 3 boys being born and one little girl. The little girl is actually a niece to my grandmother, not a grandchild , but all are cousins to me.

Here is a photo of the dress I will be sending:

First, I made a yellow jacket to match the original, but mine are all cotton (two strands of size 10 held together) because it is easier for the modern person to wash since not too many want to deal with wool and babies anymore.

yellow
Then, I made a variegated purple.

Followed by an ecru model ,shown here while being made.

Still needs ribbon, then it is done.
ecru/ cream
I haven't made the last one yet, it will probably be white.

They all have a rayon cream edging as you can tell from the first photo. The original is in bad shape with holes and staining.

  2. the original jacket was made by a friend of my grandmothers in the 1930's have no idea where the original pattern came from. I just made the jackets from what I saw I don't have the pattern written down other than where the changes are so it probably wouldn't make since to any one but me at the moment maybe in time I will draft a pattern others can read.
