Seiko's Gift

This is not a very big piece but it so impresses me.

I was taking a class a few years back from my friend, Seiko Higgins, a very good quilter, to say the least.

Over the years, she has taught me how to make yo-yos, hex quilts, and to do needle-turn applique.

I have seen her quilts sell for as high as $15,000.00 to $20,000.00; can't remember the exact amount any more. That was a bed-size quilt that she did needle-turn applique on. A very good quilter is an understatement . Yes, it was at a charity auction where people tend to spend more, but still, WOW!

When she was teaching me to make yo-yos, I commented on her selection of yo-yo sizes. She uses cups as templates all the way down to nickels in the process of making her yo-yos. If I remember correctly, this one used a 50-cent piece.

Funny, she said I was a little crazy for my mini hex quilt, which I was working on while I waited for every one to show up. I told her she must be the same because of the size of her yo-yos, then we complimented each other's minis.

At the end of class she game me this one with the statement, "Only you know how crazy we are". That was several years ago; I still prize this little guy.

You are pretty much seeing the whole thing in the picture; the scanner cut off about 1/4 inch.

This little quilt measure 9 inches by 9 inches. If you look closely at the bottom of the picture, you will see a quarter for reference.

When she gave this to me she was a Professor at BYU.This isn't your average quilter. Where she gets the time to quilt and teach is amazing. Her bigger pieces have so much detail it is unbelievable that someone could do this and teach and visa versa.
