Lace edging free pattern

My friend and neighbor JoDee had this piece of antique lace.  She knows I like all things handmade and vintage so she brought it over for me to see it.   She was kind and let me borrow it for a few months until I had time to sit down and copy it.   She had a few yards of it and she plans on sewing it to a dress.   I figured it was a pretty simple pattern but elegant so I wanted to copy it and figured others might like it too.

This is my version of what I saw in the antique lace.
I am using size 30 thread in this tutorial and a size 14 steel hook ( I was matching original work)

But any size thread/yarn will work with its matching hook size

shell =(3dc, chain 2, 3 dc in space)
large shell = (3dc, chain 2, 3 dc,chain 2, 3 dc in space)

chain 50 also known as foundation chain

1. Row 1(also known as foundation row in this patterns repeats): dc in 4th stitch from hook ( skip stitches count as first dc), chain 2, skip 2 stitches, dc in the next 5 stitches, chain 4, skip 4 stitches, (dc in the next 3 stitches, chain 2,dc in the next 3 stitches)foundation shell made,ch4, skip 4 stitches sc in next stitch, ch 3, skip 2 stitch , sc in next stitch, chain 4, skip 4 stitches, make foundation shell over next 6 stitches, ch 3 turn work 
1. note: ignore ( shell stitches in  photo in that the first go round I tried cluster stitches at later revisions I changed that as it did not look right do as it reads above)

2. Row 2: make shell in shell ( 3dc, chain 2, 3dc), chain 4, 2dc in chain 3 space, chain 4, shell in shell, chain 4, 1dc in each of the next 5 dc, chain 2, 1dc in each of the next 2 dc,turn work

Row 6: in first shell do (2dc chain2)4 x 2 dc in same shell, chain 4, in second shell do (2dc chain2)4 x 2 dc in same shell,chain 4, 1dc in each of the next 9 dc, shell in shell, chain 4, 2 dc in chain 2 space, chain 4, shell in shell, chain 4,1dc in each of the next 5 dc, chain 2, 1dc in each of the next 2 dc,turn work.
1. mark the 1st dc in the serious of 9 and mark the 6th dc in the serious of 9 as your new foundation chain these will be the two posts you go into when it tells you to skip 4 stitches on the foundation row and sc into a particular stitch these are those 2 stitches.

7.  Row 7(also known as foundation row in this patterns repeats): chain 3, dc in 4th stitch from hook ( skip stitches count as first dc), chain 2, skip 2 stitches, dc in the next 5 stitches, chain 4, skip 4 stitches, shell in shell,ch4,  sc in chain 4 space, ch 3,  sc in chain 4 space, chain 4, shell in shell,  ch 3 turn work 
1. repeat rows 2 through 7 to desired length

Day 4: in the pink dress and slip

There are two of these dresses that came with matching slips this is the first of the two.

Details abound on this dress and slip set.

Pintucks on the back of the dress too not just the front.

There is a lot of detail for something that was store bought and not handmade with love.

 Usually the store bought items only have a few flowers on them this one has inset lace lace trim, bullion roses, pintucks the draw back as always with store bought no MOP buttons.

Slip details are over the top too

The button on the shoulder of the slip is in need of being re sewn on.  Almost makes me want to repalce all 6 buttons becasue of this one being loose.

Day 3:2 for 1 heirloom dresses

This is next 2 dresses that I have to show.  Yes they are vintage store bought  dresses but they are family heirlooms meaning I did not buy them the previous generation or the one before that did not sure which.

But like the others they have machine pin-tucks and white edging done by machine but  the rest of the simple embroidery is hand done.   Why am I showing two today well it is because they are the exact same dress except one is pink and one is blue. 

This is one of those times when I wish someone had told the designer of the dress you know it doesn't cost that much more to place MOP ( mother of pearl) buttons on a dress instead of ugly plastic ones details people details.  I so want to change those buttons to MOP buttons but not sure if that would be wrecking the dresses vintage wise to me they would be much nicer personally with MOP buttons.  AS you can tell all these dresses are in need of a good ironing but I did not want to do that until I had cleaned them from being in storage so you see them as they have been stored.

Adding filet rose lace to hem

About a week ago I was at a thrift shop and bought this skirt it is an Ann Taylor skirt linen with rayon embroidery and rayon lining.  I really liked the embroidery on it but I wanted it a little longer.

 So I thought it would look nice with a filet crochet rose hem.

It gives it a sort of folk look.  I crocheted the lace and sewed it to the rayon lining of the skirt, I like it.  I played with the layout for a little bit wondering if I wanted a rose centered or two roses forward. 

  I finally decided on centered was best to me. 

 

I think this will be a real nice skirt for the fall months.

Day 2 heirloom white dress

This lovely little white dress.  Does have some wear damage under one sleeve is torn.

The embroidery on this dress as with the slip is all hand done with the exception of the edging details which are machine done as are the pin tucks. 

The buttons on this dress MOP ( mother of pearl).

 

This dress does not have s tore label in it but it does look to be store bought but hand made.  The sleeves have a nice detail in that they are cuffed you don't see that too often usually lace or a decorative band.

 

I so wish more people still dressed babies like this in the summer months.

August RPLAL free pattern

Day 1 heirloom sewing slip

Here are some recent additions to the dresses that I have in my families heirloom collection.  I do hope someday my grandchildren will be able to wear these dresses if for no other reason than to have them wear them for photos.

I am going to be posting items for about 6 or 7 days of heirloom baby items again.  Parts of these dresses are hand done and parts are machine made but all are commercial bought dresses but not recently.  I am guessing the late 1940's but they could be as new as the late as the mid 1970's.  Hard to tell as the original owner can not tell me.

100% cotton from the tag I  could have guessed that.  There is 1 mother of pearl button on the left shoulder of the slip.  Hard to tell in the photos but this slip is the faintest baby blue.

The edge details are all machine stitches as are the pin tucks at the hem.  But all the other details at the center of the hem are all hand done.  Satin stitch, shadow work, drawn thread work and outline stitches are all executed by hand and very exquisitely done as well.
