Day 7 of an apron a day....

apron on bias smocked
This is a lovely smocked half-apron apron; it is on the bias. With this type, I think I am just going to have to make the apron instead of doing a written pattern because I believe that will be easier than trying to write down how many squares to smock. I'll just do it; this is also true for the other gingham aprons I will show at a later date that have chicken scratch and the like. For those who do not know, smocking is a type of embroidery. The technique is what is making the visual banding look and gathered look of the waist band on this apron. This apron is made out of five pieces. This apron also has red/ gold accent rick rack trim.

We are trying to date these; so far I think this one is 1940- 1950 because of the style of apron. Best bet, mid to late 1950's.

  1. I love the smocking on this apron and have decided I must each myself how to smock. I have done chicken scratch many years ago. I think you are right on your dates. I grew up in the fifies and remember all of these apron styles being worn by my mother and grandmother. Those were such wonderful days - everything was so simple.

  2. I have a similar apron and I'm so glad that you've dated it. Yours is simply lovely!
