Kumihimo: Japanese braiding

detail
My middle daughter has been teaching herself Kumihimo, Japanese braiding.  She is just a beginner and can make an 8 stranded flat braid and a 7 stranded round braid.  We have gotten her a few books so she can teach herself some more.  I love the fact that my children are like me if they do not know a skill they want to learn then they are willing to teach themselves.

After she started to teach herself with out telling me I figured out what she was doing and said oh yeah I have some books on that in storage some where.   But  since I could not access my books I got some different new ones for her to learn from.  My kids keep teaching themselves new things then they go to show me to find out mom already knew about this technique but I love that they try on their own first.  The only thing is I honestly do not know if there is a right and wrong side tot he braid and which side would be which.  Below is a key chain she made for me.
