Easter egg yo-yo

Here is my tutorial on an Easter egg yo-yo. It has been a while since I made one and I couldn't remember what I used for a template last time. So I ended up using my Wilton sugar egg mold. After I was all done I think last time I used a real large cookie cutter. You can always draft your own pattern too. Next time I will make the bottom wider and the top a little narrower and a lot longer to give a better egg shape. I think these would be cute as a garland, or mobile, hanging on an Easter tree. I think the cutest place would either be an Easter apron or a little girls Easter pinafore.
  • Step 1 Make a pattern any way you want.
  • Step 2 Cut out pattern (I used card stock) and pin to fabric; this saves on all the tracing. Also, you can laminate the pattern to make it last longer.
  • Step 3 Cut out yo-yo egg.
  • Step 4 Make a running stitch around egg shape yo yo (thread should have a knot on it to start with so it won't pull out).
  • Step 5 Gather the edges.
  • Step 6 Tie off thread. The center opening will be closer to the bottom not so central.

Update: Version Two

The image on left is of first template used; the image on right is the second template used, version two.

I like the shape of the second egg much better than the one I did first, when I used a Wilton Sugar egg form; the second was using that cookie cutter I couldn't find earlier. Play around with it a little and decide what will work for you the best. The handwritten measurements you see to the left and right on the eggs are taken at the tallest and widest parts of the egg.

Below you can see how much smaller the yo-yo is as compared to the template used. I am showing the second egg below. Update March 12, 2007
Anna has some at her site too now very lovely colors. She calls them yo-yolks, very cute.
Some have also shown up at "I Knew That". The Asian Cajun love that title.
That easter bunny is making the rounds early this year.

Ga-ga for Yo-yos is a group about people who like to make yo-yos and and make things with yo-yos. The fabric type, not the toy type.

DO NOT USE THIS PATTERN TO MAKE THINGS TO SELL FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY!!!!

  3. THanks for the egg yo-yo idea! I've been trying to figure out what to do on the last round of a friend's Round Robin wall hanging that has some beautifully embroidered chicks as the center block. I'll post a photo on my blog when I finish it in about a week so you can see how you inspired me.
