I finished the rug, sort of. I left the end undone and not a tapered finish like I would have done normally. This is because as we wear out more jeans I can make the rug bigger. So, I think this will be a continuing rug for a few years but it will be able to be used while it is growing and in between growth spurts. Boy it sounds like a kid!This took seven days from start to finish.

ReplyDeleteabout 30 give or take a few. Some are kids and some are adult the adult ones of course give you more material to work with.
ReplyDeleteSerendipity smiles... just last week I was looking at rug section in my monster bible of all crafts possible, and considered making a braided rug from thrift shop jeans. Your rug is just beautiful, so thrifty and practical. I'm starting my rug for sure!

ReplyDeletewhat size rug = the cost to construct would be 50 dollars a square foot for my time plus the cost of the cord and you would pay shipping both ways this is for wool blanket weight rugs thinner fabric would cost more as it would take much more time denium also will cost more as what it does to my hands makes it hard for me to do anything else for a long time i hope that all made since
DeleteYour rug looks great. I'm looking to make a rug out of all my saved old jeans. One thing I noticed is that you have no ragged ends (or sides). You must have sewn the sides together to make a smooth edge?? Thanks for any info you can give me on this step.
ReplyDeleteactually that would take forever and I would never do that as it would be a waist of time since there are easier ways. You get a smooth finish by folding both raw edges to the middle of the strip of fabric sort of like double fold seam binding. I do this while a braid. I also turn all the folded edges to the left while braiding that way when I stitch the braides together all the folds are to the inside of the rug and you get a smooth finish on the out side of the rug around the perimeter you can see the folds in one of the pictures in the 1st post of the jean rug. there is a tutorial on how to make these rugs go here http://sunshinescreations.vintagethreads.com/search/label/*braided%20rug%20tutorial and read through all the posts I meant to to a video at one time to show how to do this but I never got around to it When I can figure out what happen to my tri pod I will try and remember to do this. Please remind me again if I have not done this in the next few months thanks.

ReplyDeleteWonderful all the way around! Great writing, great instructions and the end product is simply amazing. I have been collecting jeans and getting the material ready, but it is taking much more time... I am actually deconstructing the jeans and then cutting strips using my quilting tools... I figure that I have about 150ish pairs of jeans deconstructed and about a third already in strips! I realize that I might have a very very VERY large rug! I want to make a round one... but with this much it might be 20 foot in diameter! Whoops! Maybe two?
